Or maybe my mind is just clouded by the lobster, shrimp, and fillet mignon hibachi that found it’s way to my plate. Also what is with Dutch Bros? They’re everywhere, and everyone works there. It’s like the Oregon equivalent of Microsoft and Starbucks combined. Are they anywhere besides Oregon..?

Went on Bumble and nine out of ten girls had “Dutch Brothers” in their bio. Stickers were over random vehicles. There were signs everywhere....

O h and P o rtland was neat. T he bridge systems you go by when coming down I-5 are quite impressive, and... There’s a gondola?? Right over a highway?? I really want to spend a week in Portland, just exploring.

Honestly though, Salem is a weird town. Super spread out and almost a farmtown vibe, with small downtown-ish sections interspersed throughout. Also the traffic patterns are really freaking weird. 2pm? Tons of traffic everywhere. 5-7pm? Almost no one on the roads. The town is completely dead by 9ish, with the “late” restaurants closing somewhere between 9-10pm. Also, why are there not road signs on half of the roads?! I’m trying to find my way around! I t’s a state capitol for crying out loud !

So yeah... Salem is a very strange town. I was trying to figure out what the biggest industries were in the area, with only partial success. Government, obviously. A couple of tech companies HQ’s. Some... Farming? Transportation/trucking..? Idk.

Outside of work stuff, and exploring, the only thing I’ve found to kill the time so far is restaurants. Trying a couple daily, but the best by far has been t hanks hto h abachi recommendation from C62030 wants a 6-Series GT. Thank you sir.

hOh and th is one’s for you Dr. Z

It’s not “Dutch Brothers”, it’s “Dutch BROS”... It’s a shitty coffee shop that is credited with popularizing drive through coffee stands. Their coffee is meh.

Your talk of hibachi makes me want some. Maybe I'll take the wife and kid to Salem this weekend!

There’s a Dutch Bros in the suburban California  town where I attended college. It caused a bit of a stir back when they first opened.

They opened a Dutch Bros on Broadway in Everett last year, and it is truly, TRULY, awful coffee.

My coworker wasn’t impressed either.

Yes. Go. The chef will give you a show, definitely worth a stop if you’re not too far. And good god, the price is right. These $6 cocktails would have been $14 near me :(

If you think that town is weird, don’t go to Eugene.

All I can think of that I’ve found worth stopping for in that part of the valley was the original Woodstock’s Pizza in Corvallis (a drive from Salem), which is well loved by OSU students, but doesn’t hold a candle to the locations in college towns in CA (which are only loosely affiliated). I’m still amazed this place spawned the ones in CA that I love so much.

Is this in the fly agaric zone of OR? At some point south of Portland you’ll start seeing statues, murals, and signs of these mushrooms seemingly everywhere. If WA loves marijuana, OR seemingly loves psychedelic mushrooms.

The gondola is a good ride up to a hospital run by OSHU with quite a view of the city. Other than that, I avoid Portland because they make our homeless problem look minor. It’s like an open air mental health ward with no orderlies where you’re dodging crazies, making your way around encampments/sleeping bags, and tiptoeing around human waste on the sidewalks...

I’m surprised you didn’t end up in soul-crushing traffic in the I-5 bridge mess around Portland. I hate going through that part of I-5 due to the seemingly-perpetual awful traffic. I see brake lights in your picture, but it doesn’t look like the usual near-standstill I seem to encounter.

What is that thing on top of the hearse? It’s messing with my depth perception.

Plenty of Dutch Bros in eastern WA.

Salem is the Olympia of OR, Eugene is the Bellingham of OR.

The tram goes to OHSU. Not much parking up there in top of the hill. So lots of people use it to commute.

Are you planning on stopping in Portland at all?

Not this time. It was all work, and then necessary socializing afterwards. Loved the area though and I will be back once I have a vehicle that could make the trip in some semblance of comfort
